Education

David Stowell’s areas of expertise include financial institutions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, regulation of financial markets, venture capital, and private equity. He has testified at trial and in depositions in numerous cases. Professor Stowell has presented testimony on matters related to investment banks, hedge funds, and private equity companies, and on their usual and customary processes and activities, as well as their products. He has also testified on the valuation of securities. The venues where he has appeared as an expert witness include U.S. district courts, U.S. bankruptcy courts, the Delaware Court of Chancery, the Paris Court of Appeal, and the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands.

Professor Stowell also has extensive industry experience. Prior to his faculty position at Northwestern University, he worked at JP Morgan as managing director and head of Midwest investment banking. At UBS Investment Bank he served as managing director and cohead of equity capital markets, at Goldman Sachs as vice president for corporate finance, and at O’Connor Partners as managing director for equity derivatives.

Professor Stowell is the author of the textbook, Investment Banks, Hedge Funds, and Private Equity, published by Elsevier. He also holds a teaching affiliation with the Kellogg School’s Heizer Center for Private Equity and Venture Capital.
