Sinan Aral is a prominent artificial intelligence (AI) expert specializing in digital strategy, data science, and business analytics. Professor Aral is an authority on the social, economic, and business implications of applied and agentic AI, human-AI collaboration, AI search, AI negotiation, the skill and labor market implications of AI adoption, and the productivity and performance effects of AI sycophancy.
Professor Aral analyzes the social and economic impacts of applied AI in the digital economy, focusing on its productivity and performance effects, social networks, digital experimentation, targeting models, natural language processing technologies, and the rise of sharing economies and new digital marketplaces.
In addition to holding a tenured chair at the MIT Sloan School, Professor Aral is a venture capital (VC) investor; cofounder and CEO of an applied AI startup, Pairium AI; and the former chief scientist of two other technology start-ups.
Expert testimony in federal antitrust litigation
Professor Aral has been retained as an expert witness in a high-profile federal antitrust matter and a data privacy case in Europe, and has testified in depositions. His data science and digital marketplace expertise positions him to opine on other antitrust matters involving platform competition, digital ecosystem dynamics, and market dilution allegations.
Scientific research on AI, social media, and algorithmic impacts
Professor Aral conducts consequential research on topics at the intersection of applied AI, computational social science, information systems, social commerce, and digital marketing. He has analyzed social media manipulation, network seeding, the strength of weak ties in social networks, online information diffusion, and true and false news. Professor Aral’s coauthored article on the spread of false news online was published on the cover of Science and became the second most influential scientific publication of the year in any discipline.
In adjacent work, Professor Aral conducts large-scale randomized field experiments and consumer surveys to examine human trust in AI search overviews using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), autonomous AI negotiations, AI personalization, supervised fine-tuning of AI systems with human-aligned judgment, AI sycophancy, emergent coordination in AI agent swarms, and the use of personal data for AI product development and delivery. His ongoing research also addresses the evolving economic and legal complexities surrounding AI and copyright.
Professor Aral has assessed the business value of AI and information technology investments, evaluating how enterprise systems, paywalls, cloud computing, advertising, algorithmic pricing, and algorithmic targeting affect firm performance and worker productivity.
Publications and global speaking engagements
Professor Aral publishes peer-reviewed articles in leading journals, including Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Nature Communications, Nature Human Behaviour, Management Science, Marketing Science, Information Systems Research, and the Journal of Research in Interactive Marketing.
He has received multiple best paper awards, including for work on AI personalization (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences); targeting for long-term outcomes (Management Science); social contagions (Network Science); and digital paywall design and subscriptions (Management Science).
Professor Aral is the author of The Hype Machine: How Social Media Disrupts Our Elections, Our Economy, and Our Health—and How We Must Adapt, which Wired named one of the best books on AI.
Widely cited in the news media, Professor Aral’s work has been featured by ABC News, the Boston Globe, Businessweek, CNN, The Economist, MSNOW (formerly MSNBC), NBC News, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, among others. He frequently appears on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Ali Velshi, Morning Joe, and Yahoo Finance, discussing topics related to AI.
Professor Aral is a sought-after speaker, delivering invited presentations and keynotes at professional and academic conferences, leading universities, and technology companies across the U.S., Europe, and in Asia.
Entrepreneurial expertise in VC and AI start-ups
Professor Aral cofounded Pairium AI, a company born of proprietary MIT research into the productivity and performance benefits of AI personalization. He is also a cofounder and general partner of two VC firms, Manifest Growth and Milemark Capital, which invest in early- and growth-stage companies in the AI and machine learning, advertising technology, augmented reality, biotech, e-commerce, and environmental sectors.
Previously, Professor Aral served as the chief scientist at SocialAmp, one of the first social commerce analytics companies, and at Humin, a social platform. Both companies were subsequently acquired by larger industry leaders.
Professor Aral consults to Fortune 100 companies and heads of state on AI and digital strategy and has served on the advisory boards of the Alan Turing Institute in London; MediaFutures: Research Centre for Responsible Media Technology and Innovation in Bergen, Norway; and C6 Bank in Sao Paulo, the first all-digital bank of Brazil.
Award-winning teaching and academic leadership
At MIT Sloan, Professor Aral has taught courses in digital marketing, business analytics, and blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. He was awarded the Jamieson Prize for Excellence in teaching, MIT Sloan’s highest teaching honor.
Professor Aral directs the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE), one of MIT Sloan’s largest research centers. The IDE examines the social, economic, and business implications of applied AI and other digital technologies, and how people and businesses interact amid rapid technological change.
Professor Aral is a former scholar-in-residence at the New York Times research and development (R&D) lab and previously served on the faculty at New York University’s Stern School of Business.
