Thomas Jeitschko is an industrial organization economist with expertise in antitrust and consumer protection, game theory, and topics at the intersection of law and economics. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has retained him as an expert, and he has consulted to federal and international agencies and U.S. state attorneys general, on antitrust and consumer protection matters in the agriculture, financial markets, paper products, and retail gas industries, among others.

Research on competition and market design

Professor Jeitschko applies economic theory to competition and industrial organization issues. His recent work addresses platform and digital market competition, including two-sided pricing, how users choose among competing platforms, and zero-rating and vertical foreclosure in telecommunications. He analyzes auctions and market design, including spectrum allocation and cap-and-trade emissions markets, as well as how markets operate under incomplete information.

His work also examines antitrust and intellectual property (IP) questions, including merger remedies and the effects of patent pooling on innovation. His earlier research spans banking regulation, financial intermediation, and behavioral economics.

Government experience and university leadership

As a research economist at the DOJ, Professor Jeitschko led investigations into mergers and potentially anticompetitive conduct across complex sectors, such as airlines, telecommunications, and internet content provision; healthcare and medical insurance, including Medicaid; and securities and derivatives exchanges.

At Michigan State University (MSU), he has held senior leadership roles including interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, leading more than 400 academic programs and numerous outreach engagements. His responsibilities covered 10,000 faculty, academic professionals, and staff, along with an annual budget of approximately $850 million.

Publications and editorial boards

Professor Jeitschko has published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the American Economic Review, the European Economic Review, the International Economic Review, Economic Theory, and the Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization. He has served on many international editorial boards, including the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and the International Journal of Industrial Organization.

Teaching and academic appointments

At MSU, Professor Jeitschko has taught graduate courses in game theory, managerial economics, and antitrust and regulation. His undergraduate teaching includes microeconomics, mathematical economics, and finance and information.

Earlier in his career, Professor Jeitschko served on the faculty at Royal Holloway College, University of London and, previously, at Texas A&M University. He has held visiting academic appointments at Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, University College London, and Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany.
