Counsel for the defendant, Entrust Technologies, retained Dr. Michael Keeley of Cornerstone Research in this patent infringement case. Entrust was developing commercial applications of digital encryption technology for use in Internet commerce.

The jury found no liability and no damages.

Dr. Keeley analyzed the success of the technology and both sides’ license agreements, and assessed the calculation of damages allegedly sustained by Surety. He demonstrated that Surety had no basis for its damage claims. The trial judge agreed, and during the trial excluded the key portion of plaintiffs’ damage claims. The jury found no liability and no damages.
