In 1999, the world’s major vitamin producers pled guilty in the United States to conspiring to fix vitamin prices from 1990 to 1999. The producers, including F. Hoffmann- LaRoche Ltd., Rhône-Poulenc S.A., BASF AG, Eisai Co., Ltd., Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd., Lonza AG, Daiichi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and Degussa AG, paid fines of over $870 million in the United States and over $1.6 billion worldwide. Civil suits followed the criminal investigation.
