This prestigious Mexican award celebrates exceptional research focused on analyzing and solving economic issues.
Eduardo Medina-Cortina has been awarded Mexico’s most prestigious economics award, the Banamex Prize for Economics (Premio Banamex de Economía) for 2023. Awarded in April 2025, this prize is presented annually by Grupo Financiero Banamex, the largest commercial bank in Mexico. It is one of the most significant international accolades for economists in Latin America and the Caribbean and celebrates exceptional research focused on analyzing and solving the region’s economic issues.
Dr. Medina-Cortina and his co-author, Daniel Osuna of the Central Bank of Mexico, won the award for their research paper, “The Effect of Immigration Enforcement Abroad on Immigrants’ Home-Country Firms.” The paper examines how immigration enforcement in the U.S. impacts migrant origin regions in Mexico through deportations. The study reveals that Mexican regions receiving a higher number of deportees experience growth in the size, revenue, and exports of their establishments. These changes are attributed to increased consumer demand, the transfer of human and financial capital, and reductions in local labor costs.
