Arunesh Mathur has over ten years of experience working at the nexus of artificial intelligence (AI), human factors, and technology policy. At Cornerstone Research’s Data Science Center, Dr. Mathur leads the design and implementation of internal tools, leveraging advanced data collection and machine learning (ML) methods to provide support through all phases of litigation. He also consults on topical technology issues such as dark patterns, data privacy, algorithmic auditing, and interoperability.

Before joining Cornerstone Research, Dr. Mathur worked at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the United Kingdom, where he led the development of AI tools and models to enhance the CMA’s case discovery and investigation capabilities. He served as a technical expert advisor on antitrust cases involving allegations of biased ML algorithms and unfair data access. Dr. Mathur also contributed to the CMA’s reports on online choice architecture and AI foundation models.

Dr. Mathur has presented his research at leading computer science conferences, including the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (S&P), and the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS). He has received several best paper awards, and his research and commentary have been covered in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, WIRED, and the Washington Post, among other news media.

Dr. Mathur’s doctoral thesis on dark patterns received the 2021 Annual SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Award, a distinction given annually to the most outstanding research contributions in human-computer interaction (HCI) research worldwide.
