Carmen Taveras has over fifteen years of experience analyzing financial and economic issues in complex litigation and regulatory investigations. Specializing in financial markets and institutions, Dr. Taveras has deep expertise in pricing and trading issues related to equity, fixed income, derivatives, and crypto assets. She conducts liability and damages analysis in high-profile matters across various industries, with an emphasis on broker-dealers, asset managers, and FinTech platforms.

Prior to joining Cornerstone Research, Dr. Taveras served for over a decade at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). As an assistant director in the Office of Litigation Economics, she led a team of economists providing analysis for hundreds of enforcement actions.

Testifying experience in financial litigation

Dr. Taveras has provided expert testimony at deposition and trial in both civil and criminal matters. Her testifying experience includes:

  • Analyzing millions of order and trading records in a high-profile criminal matter alleging market manipulation
  • Assessing materiality and estimating disgorgement on several matters involving insider trading allegations
  • Analyzing alleged front-running of client orders and evaluating claims of ill-gotten gains
  • Estimating ill-gotten gains and damages arising from prohibited trading activity
Quantitative analysis of financial markets and misconduct claims

As a consultant, Dr. Taveras applies advanced econometrics and statistical techniques to analyze complex financial activities and quantify their economic impact. She supports academic and industry experts in matters involving financial markets and FinTech. Dr. Taveras’s representative experience includes:

  • Assessing economic materiality and damages in securities class actions
  • Analyzing the economics and suitability of options and other derivatives
  • Consulting on matters alleging market manipulation and investment advisor abuse
  • Assisting clients in addressing financial regulatory investigations
  • Assisting clients with valuation issues

Dr. Taveras has received multiple prestigious honors, including the SEC Chair’s Award for Investor Protection, the Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement Award, and the DOJ’s Southern District of New York Award.

Prior to her government service, Dr. Taveras was a principal in a consulting firm specializing in securities litigation.
