Georgios Effraimidis is an economist specializing in intellectual property (IP) and antitrust matters. Dr. Effraimidis has addressed reasonable royalty and lost profits estimation involving patents and has also analyzed standard essential patents (SEPs) and fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing terms. In antitrust cases, he has assessed class certification, liability, and damages in matters alleging price fixing, vertical restraints, tying, bundling, exclusionary conduct, and monopolization.

Dr. Effraimidis’s industry expertise spans the artificial intelligence (AI) technology stack, including data infrastructure, model development, and deployment platforms. He also has extensive experience with cloud and edge computing, digital platforms, the Internet of Things (IoT), pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and wireless communications.

Dr. Effraimidis served for over five years as an economist in the litigation department at Qualcomm Inc., focusing on patent licensing negotiations, valuation, and economic strategy issues involving competitive dynamics in the semiconductor industry.

Intellectual property

Dr. Effraimidis consults on patent disputes involving reasonable royalty and lost profits estimation. In these contexts, he applies economic analysis to assess patent value and damages under the Georgia-Pacific and Panduit frameworks.

During his tenure at Qualcomm, Dr. Effraimidis led cross-functional teams conducting economic valuation and strategy analysis in support of high-profile litigation, including FTC v. Qualcomm. He guided the development of multiple FRAND valuation methodologies to assess Qualcomm’s extensive SEP portfolio, comprising thousands of patents across diverse technology areas.

Antitrust and competition

For major technology companies, Dr. Effraimidis has analyzed antitrust allegations involving monopolization, exclusionary conduct, and tying across industries such as digital advertising technology, smartwatch applications, and semiconductors.  In these matters, he has evaluated market definition, market power, business justifications, and competitive dynamics.

In price-fixing disputes, Dr. Effraimidis has led and conducted economic analyses to assess price impacts, classwide overcharges, and pass-through, including matters involving semiconductor components and generic drugs.

Thought leadership

Dr. Effraimidis researches various topics related to IP, antitrust, and innovation. He has published articles in Law360, Antitrust Bulletin, IEEE Communications Standards Magazine, and the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice, among other outlets. In addition, Dr. Effraimidis speaks at academic and professional conferences on issues at the intersection of economics, law, and technology.

Dr. Effraimidis is a past winner of George Mason University’s Thomas Edison Innovation Fellowship. He has also served as vice chair of the Information Technology Committee of the American Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Section.

Before joining Cornerstone Research, Dr. Effraimidis conducted research and taught Ph.D. courses in statistics at the University of Southern California. He previously worked at another leading litigation consulting firm, supporting clients and experts in IP and antitrust matters.
