Scott Wilson is a financial economist with expertise and experience across a broad range of issues involving insurance markets, pension plans, securities, investments, and financial institutions. Dr. Wilson leads teams that support experts and attorneys across all phases of regulatory matters and litigation, including class certification, merits, mediation, and trial.

Insurance and pension plans

Dr. Wilson coheads the firm’s insurance and pension plans practice. His experience includes:

  • Evaluating actuarial issues related to insurance pricing and loss-reserving
  • Assessing asset and liability management (ALM) issues
  • Analyzing insurance company surplus levels, risk-based capital (RBC), and other metrics of financial health
  • Examining state-level insurance regulations and protections offered by state guaranty associations
  • Evaluating claims-handling processes, including the custom and practice in setting case reserves and paying claims
  • Analyzing funding of reinsurance trusts and credit for reinsurance
  • Conducting valuations of pension and post-retirement welfare liabilities
Securities

Dr. Wilson has extensive experience in securities matters, including:

  • Examining market efficiency, price impact, loss causation, and damages on numerous Rule 10b-5, Section 11, and Section 12 matters
  • Performing event studies on common shares, American depositary receipts (ADRs), preferred stock, and corporate bonds trading on multiple exchanges and in over-the-counter (OTC) markets
  • Assessing damages calculations for mediation and settlement talks
Investments and financial institutions

Dr. Wilson has broad experience in matters involving investments and financial institutions. His experience includes:

  • Addressing valuation and other issues in fraudulent transfer litigation brought by bankruptcy trustees and creditors of distressed companies
  • Evaluating mutual funds’ performance and fees
  • Addressing alleged misrepresentations and damages in cases involving consumer finance
  • Analyzing issues related to custom and practice in private equity and venture capital
  • Evaluating allegations of collusive trading behavior in OTC markets and interest rate benchmark manipulation
  • Estimating damages and evaluating losses in residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) cases

Before joining Cornerstone Research, Dr. Wilson was a consultant at JPMorgan Benefit and Compensation Strategies, where he provided actuarial services to pension plans. During his Ph.D. studies, he worked with the risk management and tactical asset allocation team of a large public pension fund.
