Jules White is a nationally recognized expert in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), large language models (LLMs), big data science and engineering, and cyber-physical systems. His work focuses on the optimization and security of LLMs, software, and mobile and cloud computing.

A pioneer in the study of human-AI interaction, Professor White created one of the first online prompt engineering courses, reaching over one million learners across Coursera and LinkedIn. The National Science Foundation has honored him with its prestigious CAREER Award for his analyses of cybersecurity and software engineering issues.

As an expert witness, Professor White has been retained in multiple matters and has testified in depositions and at trial. He also provides technical analysis as an expert consultant and source code review in matters involving consumer protection and privacy, intellectual property (IP), and trade secrets.

GenAI and LLM expertise across multiple sectors

Professor White conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, prompt engineering, and smart infrastructure. He examines the systematic development of prompt patterns and code quality to enhance LLMs’ reliability and efficiency in complex problem-solving.

In the healthcare field, Professor White has analyzed the integration of GenAI models to automate the translation of clinical abstracts into lay language. He has also studied how distributed ledger technology (DLT) and machine learning (ML) can improve data stewardship and patient-reported outcomes in mobile health environments.

Professor White has evaluated vulnerabilities in large-scale industrial systems, advanced manufacturing, and critical infrastructure. He has developed methods to identify “silent” cyberattacks that bypass traditional security. His research on deep learning training and natural language-to-command translation applies to a variety of sectors, including FinTech and industrial automation.

Award-winning publications and innovation

A prolific researcher, Professor White has published nearly two hundred papers in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, the Journal of Advances in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Journal of Manufacturing Systems.

He has received multiple best paper awards from international technology conferences. Professor White has also authored multiple book chapters on AI topics, software architecture, and distributed processing systems. CNN, The Guardian, Time, and the Wall Street Journal have cited his work.

Professor White is an inventor named on multiple patents. He has cofounded several venture-backed startup companies focused on mobile security and computer vision technologies.

Academic leadership and teaching

At Vanderbilt, Professor White has taught courses on AI agents, GenAI, mobile computing, cloud computing, networking, cybersecurity, and principles of software engineering. He is the senior advisor to the Chancellor on Generative AI in Enterprise and Education and also directs the Vanderbilt Amplify Generative AI Innovation Center. He researches, develops, and supports the application of GenAI and AI agents to university operations.

Professor White previously served on the faculty at Virginia Tech, where he taught network application design, among other subjects, and was recognized for excellence in teaching.
