Arnold Barnett is an expert in operations research, statistics, and applied mathematical modeling, with a focus on health and safety issues.

Professor Barnett has provided expert testimony on statistical design and analysis, as well as statistical sampling, in numerous matters. He has testified on health and safety issues, mortgage-backed securities, transportation, and consumer finance, among other topics.

In City of Providence, Rhode Island, et al. v. BATS Global Markets Inc. et al., an alleged market manipulation class action, Professor Barnett testified that the plaintiffs’ damages methodology was greatly limited from a statistical perspective and was not a reliable way to calculate alleged harm. He also provided testimony on statistical sampling issues in one of the earliest matters involving residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS).

Professor Barnett publishes his research in specialist academic journals, including Risk Analysis, Transportation Science, and Management Science, and has served on multiple editorial boards. He has written textbooks on probability and statistics and was honored by the Flight Safety Foundation for “truly outstanding contributions with respect to safety.”

Professor Barnett received the President’s Award and the Expository Writing Award from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and is also an INFORMS Fellow.

At MIT Sloan, Professor Barnett has taught courses on probability and statistics, logistics and transportation planning, and the global aviation industry. He has been honored fifteen times for outstanding teaching.
