Matthew Calvin provides economic and financial analysis and expert support in all phases of commercial litigation. Dr. Calvin has worked across a diverse set of merger and antitrust matters, including Meta’s $1 billion acquisition of Kustomer.
Antitrust and competition
Dr. Calvin analyzes class certification, liability, and damages in matters alleging monopolization and anticompetitive conduct. His industry experience in these contexts includes e-commerce, technology, and pharmaceuticals. In a variety of cases, Dr. Calvin has:
- Analyzed horizontal restraints and alleged abuse of market power in e-commerce
- Assessed class certification issues in e-commerce
- Evaluated monopolization and anticompetitive pricing claims for large technology platforms
- Reviewed and analyzed large volumes of retailer data to assess allegations of anticompetitive behavior
Mergers
Dr. Calvin has analyzed the competitive effects of proposed mergers on behalf of both regulators and merging parties. He supported clients and experts in the Meta/Kustomer merger, evaluating competitive effects for regulatory review as well as other matters. He has also consulted on mergers in the health insurance and telecommunications industries.
Thought leadership
Dr. Calvin has contributed research to academic and professional publications on topics related to sports streaming, procompetitive effects of mergers, and theories of labor harm in mergers.
He is a Young Economist Representative (YER) for the Trade, Sports, and Professional Associations Committee in the Section of Antitrust Law of the American Bar Association (ABA), and an editorial board member of the ABA Joint Conduct Committee’s Quick Look publication.
